Admission Requirements

The DPT Program at Hampton University participates in the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service, known as PTCAS. Applicants applying to the entry-level professional physical therapist program must apply online using the PTCAS application. The PT program application deadline is January 15th annually.  To learn more about the PTCAS application process, please visit the PTCAS web site at www.ptcas.org. The Department of Physical Therapy Admissions Committee selects students for admission.

A complete Physical Therapy application package must include:

  • PTCAS application (submitted at www.ptcas.org ). PTCAS application instructions »
  • Graduate College application »
  • Graduate College Application fee: $35.00 paid online or money order made payable to Hampton University
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended sent to PTCAS
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE scores) sent to PTCAS (program code is 7559)

    Please note: Transcripts, essays, letters of recommendations, or GRE scores should not be sent as paper documents to the PT department or the Graduate College. Please upload those documents into PTCAS.

The following criteria must be met to enter the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program:

  1. GRE Score Report;
    • Minimum Score Requirements: 
      Revised version (150 minimum Verbal or 4.0 Analytical Writing; 144 minimum Quantitative Reasoning); Original version (950 composite including 450 minimum Verbal)
  2. Bachelor's Degree;
  3. Completion, with a "C" or better, of the following courses or their equivalent:

    General Biology I w/lab 4 hrs
    General Chemistry I w/lab 4 hrs
    General Chemistry II w/lab 4 hrs
    General Physics I w/lab 4-5 hrs
    General Physics II w/lab 4-5 hrs
    Human Anatomy w/lab 4 hrs
    Human Physiology w/lab 3 hrs
    Introduction to Statistics 3 hrs
    General Psychology 3 hrs
  4. A minimum of 40 hours of volunteer or work experience in physical therapy (hospital, clinic etc.) with documentation signed by a licensed physical therapist.
  5. A 3.0 cumulative GPA of all coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for science prerequisite courses;
  6. A knowledge of the profession as evidenced by a personal statement detailing the reasons for professional choice;
  7. Two letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's moral character and suitability for a physical therapy career, one letter must be written by a licensed physical therapist;
  8. All science prerequisites must have been completed within the last eight (8) years.

Please Note:
Prerequisite courses in progress must be completed by June 30th prior to fall semester enrollment. An updated transcript should be sent to PTCAS. Anatomy and physiology can be taken as a combined course only if the two part sequence is completed (4 credits and lab for each). The other option is separate courses (4 credits plus lab for Human Anatomy and 3 credits no lab for Human Physiology).
