CLaSS merges traditionally separate disciplines by advancing the fundamental
understanding of selected problems at the forefront of science and technology
using laser spectroscopy as the common unifying theme. Specific research thrusts
include
fluorescent spectroscopy
and laser crystal development, nonlinear
spectroscopy of semiconducting nanocrystals, and laser remote sensing. The
research thrusts also have a synergistic interdependency with the education
and outreach program that consists of undergraduate and graduate curricula
development, research training and professional development, and K-12 outreach.

Education and Outreach Activities
- Students and faculty attend weekly seminars at HU, given
by leading scientists.
- Physics Seniors are required to write a Capstone Thesis
based on their research.
- Undergraduate students are required to write a paper
and give a talk each semester.
- Recruitment strategies include the development of a pipeline
of potential students.
- High school juniors and seniors participated in summer
research programs.
- More than 1200 K-12 students were exposed to CREST outreach
efforts (e.g. laboratory visits, class-room demonstration,
rocket clubs).
